HODGDON, Maine — Ruth Edna Simpson, 100, passed away Monday October 2, 2017 at the Gardiner Health Care Facility. She was born November 6, 1916, in Woodstock, NB, Canada, the daughter of Roy and Adelaide (Dow) Atherton.
Ruth grew up in Woodstock and graduated from Woodstock High School and completed her education at Carleton County Vocational School. She married Sterle Simpson on August 1, 1937 and together they would raise five children and share many years together. Ruth was a past member of the BB Club, Aroostook County Extension, and PTA as well as a longtime member of Hodgdon Baptist Church. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, and loved the Boston Red Sox and could tell you all about them. Ruth also enjoyed cooking and would often cook for others. She had a selfless attitude and always went the extra mile to help someone in need.
She is survived by her five children: Virginia Hodge of Middletown, CT, Annette Nerine and Albert of Ashford, CT, Mary Ann Higgins and Peter of East Hartford, CT, Linda Stevens of Conroe, TX, Barbara Stevens and Otis of Linneus, fourteen grandchildren, and twenty-four great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind a sister-in-law Lilly McQuarrie of Lake Hayward, CT as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband Sterle in 1996, a brother Archie Atherton, three sons-in-law, Robert Hodge, Fred Nerine, Waldo Eugene Stevens, and a grandson Freddie Nerine.
The family would also like to thank Dr. Abouleish and the staff at Gardiner Health Care Facility for all the good care they gave Ruth.
Friends called 12 Noon Friday, October 6, 2017 at Dunn Funeral Home, where a service was conducted at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Ray Gough officiating. Interment followed at Hodgdon Cemetery.
