MSSM sweeps cross country race in Washburn

WASHBURN, Maine — Thirty seven boys and 28 girls, representing seven Aroostook County schools, completed the 3.1-mile course in the cross country meet held at Washburn District High School Tuesday afternoon.

The Maine School of Science and Mathematics girls and boys swept the titles in the team results. The Penguin girls scored 30 points to edge GHCA, which tallied 34. Washburn was third with 65. The MSSM boys’ 32 points were nine better than GHCA, which came in with 41. Washburn posted 68, Madawaska 100 and Fort Kent 111.

Individual winners were MSSM’s Dolcie Tanguay in the girls’ competiton and Hodgdon’s Joel Bond for the boys.

Tanguay finished with a time of 20 minutes and 57.5 seconds, which was just 1.3 seconds ahead of GHCA’s Bridget Hill (20:58.8). Grace Graham, also of GHCA, claimed the third spot in 21:04.

The remainder of the top 10 was made up of Naomi Kihn of MSSM (21:19.4), Madison McCarthy of MSSM (21:32.4), Teagan Ewings of GHCA (23:09.7), Jordyn Ritchie of Katahdin (23:19.8), Kassandra Farley of Washburn (23:29.4), Madison Miller of Washburn (23:32.4) and Charlotte McCulloh of MSSM (25:33.3).

Jeannelle Ross of Hodgdon was 11th overall in 25:36.6 and led her team, while Kelly Paradis of Fort Kent placed 17th in 28:49.7 as her team’s top performer.

On the boys’ side, Bond won his race by a much more comfortable margin. He crossed the finish line in 18:08.2. Wesley Ganglfinger was the runner-up in 18:32.5 and Will Perkins of MSSM took third in 18:49.6.

Others within the top 10 were James Cyr of MSSM (19:00.2), Cole Winslow of GHCA (20:16.2), Sawyer LaChance of MSSM (20:19.2), Matthew Cyr of Madawaska (20:21.8), Oliver Wainman of MSSM (20:43.5), Aidan Churchill of Washburn (20:49.6) and Will Austin of GHCA (21:01.1).

Brandon Thibeault led the Fort Kent Warriors, finishing 11th in 21:25.2.
