WASHBURN, Maine — The Washburn girls’ basketball team, only 2 1/2 years removed from winning its fifth consecutive state basketball title, will play under its third coach in as many seasons.

Jon Poisson has been hired as the new coach, according to Washburn District High School Athletic Director Ron Ericson. Poisson is a physical education and health teacher at the school and has served as the JV girls’ coach and a varsity assistant the past three years.

“He has been heavily involved with our sports programs in all grades and sports, for both girls and boys,” Ericson said.

Poisson also has coached middle school sports in Limestone and was the varsity boys soccer coach in Katahdin in 2014.

He is a former Limestone High School athlete, who graduated in 2005. He graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 2013.

“It’s been a goal of mine to become a varsity coach, so I’m very excited,” Poisson said. He considers himself a defensive-oriented coach and is excited to implement that style with this year’s Beaver squad.

“I have seen what the team can do defensively and I hope we can turn it up a notch this year,” Poisson said.

He takes over for Tyler Putnam, who coached the team for one season and resigned last summer to accept a teaching position out of the area. Under Putnam, the Beavers defeated Central Aroostook in the quarterfinals before losing to eventual regional champion Shead of Eastport in the semifinals.

Prior to that, Diana Trams had coached the team for four seasons before resigning to spend more time with her children. The Beavers won state championships in each of her first three seasons.

Poisson and his wife, Jessica, have two children — Michael, 3, and Rose, 2 months.
