PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — A group of supporters will walk Saturday, Oct. 14, in support of those with visual impairments.
White Cane Awareness Day, nationally recognized on Oct. 15, will be honored across the state on Saturday, Oct. 14, with a number of events and walks. The day creates awareness of the white cane, a tool used by persons with visual impairment to safely navigate foot travel.
Presque Isle participants will gather at 10 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot by Wilder’s Jewelry. The walk will consist of a few laps of Main Street. The public is welcome. All participants are invited to a social breakfast following the walk. For more information, contact Bruce Archer, 512-6300 or
“White Cane Awareness Day is an important step in educating the public about how the white cane is used by persons with visual impairment,” said Commissioner of Labor John Butera. “Along with alerting the user to terrain and level changes, the white cane alerts others, including drivers, that the person with visual impairment may not see them.”
