Owl men split matches

The UMPI men’s soccer team netted three goals on their way to their third win of the season as they beat the Central Maine Community College Mustangs by a score of 3-1 Saturday.

Ansumana Morrow, Chris Udobi and Sean Barbosa netted goals for the Owls in the win.

The following afternoon, Wheelock College earned its first victory in the history of the program with a 2-0 blanking of the Owls. UMPI outshot Wheelock 25-14, but Pasulayman Sowe and Sam Murray scored goals for the Wildcats. Matt Manter had six saved in goal for the 3-9 Owls.

UMPI plays UM-Machias Wednesday, Oct. 18, Hampshire College on Saturday, Oct. 21, at 1:30 p.m and Southern Maine Community College at noon on Sunday, Oct. 22.

Women’s soccer team falls to MMA

The Maine Maritime Academy Mariners put pressure on the Owls from the start and cruised to a 6-0 victory Sunday.

The Mariners would outshoot UMPI 26-4 in the matchup, dominating possession. The Owls, now 1-7, mustered only two shots on goal, while MMA tallied 16. The scoring started early as Eryn Doiron put the ball in the net just 2:08 into the game. She ended the game with two goals to power the offense on the afternoon.

Allie Lopez was under pressure all game and was credited with 10 saves in goal for UMPI.  

The Owls travel to Unity on Saturday, Oct. 21, to take on the Rams at 3 p.m. It will be a rematch of a 2-0 homecoming loss for UMPI. Coach Trevor Parent’s team then plays UM-Machias on Sunday, Oct. 22, and UM-Fort Kent Tuesday, Oct. 24.

Cross country teams compete in state meet

BRUNSWICK, Maine – In their fifth race of the season the UMPI Owls showed the results of their hard work in Saturday’s Maine State Championship meet at Bowdoin College.  

The Owl women placed 12th as a team. Bates was the champion and was led by Katherine Cook, who took the individual title by clocking the five kilometers in 17:47.  

Emmy Churchill was the leader for the Owls, completing the course in 23:30 and finishing in 93rd place of 150 finishers. Chenoa Jackson was the second Owls finisher, improving to a season’s best time of 25:50 and taking 123rd place.  

The men came in 11th overall. Bates was the team champion and Ben Torda of Bowdoin was the individual winner as he finished the 8K in 25:25.

Saul Nunez was 99th out of 146 finisher in 32:33 to lead the way for the Owls and teammate Kyle Davis was 102nd overall in 32:44.

The Owls now go into a two week cycle as they work toward the North Atlantic Championship meet to be held at UM-Farmington Saturday, Oct. 28, a course they ran in their opening meet on Sept. 2.

Volleyball squad drops 3

The Owls volleyball team is now 9-16 on the season after losing to Maine Maritime Wednesday, Oct. 11, and both Middlebury College and Bowdoin College on Saturday, Oct. 14.

Against MMA, UMPI was led by Maddi Thweatt, who had seven kills and three digs. Taylor Johnson kept the Owls in the match with her defensive effort, racking up 12 digs, while Miranda Washinawatok contributed 11 digs.

In the loss to Middlebury, Thweatt tallied seven kills, Washinawatok had nine digs and Johnson notched eight. Brittney Harper had 12 assists and five digs.

Against Bowdoin, Thweatt paced the defense with five digs, while Johnson would end with a pair of service aces.

UMPI will host the University of Maine at Machias for a doubleheader on Wednesday, Oct. 18, and then make the trip to Massachusetts to take on Emerson College and Salem State Saturday, Oct. 21.
