PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Officials with the Presque Isle Utility District have asked the city if there’s interest in turning property owned by the district into an extension of the bike path along the Presque Isle stream.
At the Oct. 4 council meeting, City Manager Martin Puckett recommended that councilors form a subcommittee to pursue development of the district property.
“That area is pretty wet down there, so it’s unlikely we’d be able to do a regular bike path there, so this would be an elevated surface that would go through a wooded area,” Puckett said.
Puckett is calling the elevated surface a Bog Walk. If developed, the city would build a planked walkway along the stream similar to one in Orono, Puckett added.
The PIUD is in the process of tearing down the old treatment facility on Chapman Street, which could be used as parking area at the beginning of the trail, Puckett indicated.
The property begins at the end of St. John Street and connects to the bike path.
Puckett added that if the property is developed, there is potential to add an additional boat launch further south of the current boat landing at Riverside Park.
The council agreed to form a subcommittee to continue discussion on development.
At the moment there’s no money set aside for this project, Puckett noted.
