Caribou kids help Texas counterparts

CARIBOU, Maine — When Hurricane Harvey hit Texas, devastation spread far and wide. A group of Caribou Middle School students and their teacher recently joined in the efforts to help some young people impacted by the hurricane.

“About a month ago,” said Jennifer Michaud, life skills teacher with RSU 39, “I connected with a life skills teacher in Texas whose school was damaged heavily from Hurricane Harvey.”

Michaud went to work and raised $400. With the money, she purchased 20 pouches from Thirty-One Bags along with a slew of school supplies — enough to fill each pouch.

One recent morning, Michaud and her class worked to fill the pouches. To add a personal touch, the students wrote letters to their counterparts in Texas, and inserted a letter in each bag. The pouches will be given to students in the Texas life skills class, as a gift of support from northern Maine.

“They were amazing, kind and filled with generosity,” Michaud said of her students.
