115 Years Ago – Oct. 21, 1902
Serenade — A man playing a harp accompanied by a boy whose duty it was to saw on a violin and “pass the hat” has been serenading our business places during the present week.
Frost and thunder? — A heavy lightning and thunderstorm visited this section Sunday night about 11:00. Meanwhile, it was quite a heavy freeze last Friday night and numerous cases have been heard of where potatoes were chilled quite badly.
100 Years Ago – Oct. 25, 1917
Cablegram — Mrs. F.L. Gregory received a cablegram Sunday from Mr. Gregory, who is with the U.S Hospital Corps, stating that he had arrived safely in France.
75 Years Ago – Oct. 21, 1942
Back to the old — A change of time schedule is being used this fall at the Caribou High School has been announced by Principal John A Partridge. The new schedule lists the school day to begin at 8:30 a.m. and closing for noon recess at 11:42. The afternoon session begins at 12:47 p.m. with school closing at 3 p.m.
Milk wanted — Milk can be provided to school children at a very reasonable price through the aid of the state, which will pay for the wholesale price. Anyone having milk which they can spare for this health program is requested to contact the F.J. Blackstone & Son Dairy or the office of the superintendent of schools. If enough milk can be found, pupils can obtain one-half pint for the small cost of 1 cent.
50 Years Ago – Oct. 25, 1967
Think Big for 1968 — As most people are aware by now, on Jan. 1, 1968, Caribou will become the 22nd city in the state of Maine and the “Northeasternmost City in the United States.” In anticipation of this event, which should be one of the greatest in the history of the community, a city celebration steering committee has been organized by the Chamber of Commerce. Celebrations have been set forth which will hopefully surpass any ever held in Aroostook or the state of Maine.
Special meeting — A special town meeting will be held at Pleasant Ridge School in Caswell Plantation Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m. at which the citizens of the plantation will be asked to vote on the acceptance of the control area of Nike Site L-13 by the municipality for a consolidated elementary school. The Caswell school committee requests all interested residents to attend this meeting and to vote on this important issue.
25 Years Ago – Oct. 21, 1992
Daigle leaving — Caribou’s chairman of the high school mathematics department, James Daigle, will leave to become a supervisor in the new science and math program in Houlton. Board of education members accepted his resignation at a local meeting, effective Oct. 30. Daigle was on his 27th year with the school department.
Debating in the County — Republican Olympia Snowe, Green Party candidate Jonathan Carter and Democrat Patrick McGowan convened in Presque Isle Friday evening for a one-hour televised debate. The three candidates are vying for Maine’s 2nd congressional district. The debate was co-sponsored by the Limestone High School Close-Up Club and the Off the Record Media Club.
