102 Years Ago – Oct. 28, 1915
Negotiation — A. C. Rand negotiated with B. F. Smith of St. John, with a view of contracting to act as the latter’s agent for the purchase of from 2,000 to 10,000 horses for export to the Allies for war purposes. No better man could be chosen for such a job, as Mr. Rand had good judgment, experience and reliability, as well as acquainted with all the sources of supply to fill such a contract.
Kelly’s orchestra — Kelly’s orchestra of Bar Harbor furnished the most acceptable music for the dances held in K. of P. hall and the crowds attending were increasing each week. The orchestra consisted of Miss Kelly, violin; Miss Stevens, cornet; and Mr. Kelly, piano.
75 Years Ago – Oct. 22, 1942
Purchasing plan — Two more Presque Isle concerns, the U. J. Hedrich Co. and Reynolds and Lougee Inc., had been presented the certificates of award for 100 per cent participation in War Savings Payroll Plan, it was announced by George Blanchard, local chairman.
Guest speaker — Capt. George L. Forrester, Salvation Army director of the U. S. O. Club, was guest speaker at the Rotary Club. Forrester’s topic was the U. S. O., its origin and work.
50 Years Ago – Oct. 25, 1967
Owls win fifth straight — The Owls of Aroostook State won their fifth soccer match of the year, defeating Husson College 3 to 2. Husson, previously undefeated in league play, displayed a strong offense and able defense but was unable to stop the Owls from taking over first place in the Northeast College Soccer Conference.
New executive director — Mr. Charles W. Coughlin, a native of Syracuse, NY, and a graduate of Syracuse University where he was was affiliated with Betta Kappa Epsilon, was chosen the new executive director of the Aroostook County USO. He replaced Mr. Francis Broderick, who returned to Washington, DC.
25 Years Ago – Oct. 21, 1992
New Eagle Scout — David Currier of Presque Isle, the son of Lynn and Tyrone Currier, a member of Boy Scout Troop 271 of Presque Isle, a freshman at PIHS, earned the rank of Eagle Scout. The award was presented during a Court of Honor held Oct. 11 at the Presque Isle Knights of Columbus. The Eagle award was presented by Scoutmaster Tom Peary, with recognition offered by David Grivois and the Eagle Charge given by Winston Larsen.
Rotarians help — Susanne Sandusky, executive director of the United Way of Aroostook, and David Zulo, chairman of UWA’s building and ground committee, received a check in the amount of $800 from Bob Ashby of the Fort Fairfield Rotary Club. The rotarians held a rummage sale on Sept. 19 to raise money for the UWA building fund. This was the fourth consecutive year they have raised money for UWA and have raised more than $3,000 for the non-profit organization.
