102 Years Ago – Nov. 4, 1915
Christmas seals — The American Red Cross and the National Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis have printed 200,000,000 Red Cross Christmas seals, the proceeds of the sale of which will be used to fight tuberculosis in the communities where the seals are sold. The previous year, the association sold 55,000,000 seals. — Youths’ Companion.
The purchase of the the blacksmith business — Lewis Paynter, an excellent workman, who had been employed in the blacksmith shop of George Margison for some time, had purchased the blacksmith business of John Gerald, and leased the shop for a team of years.
75 Years Ago – Oct. 29, 1942
Chairman re-elected — Dr. C. D. Swett of Island Falls was re-elected chairman of the Aroostook Area of the Katahdin Council, Boy Scouts of America, at the annual meeting staged at the High School. Other officers elected were Sam Colling, Caribou, 1st vice chairman; Donald Ellis, Houlton, 2nd vice chairman; George Rice, Madawaska, 3rd vice chairman; Ralph emerson, Island Falls, area commissioner; and L. H. Alline, Presque Isle, member of the executive committee.
Brandt ordained — The semi-annual meeting of the Aroostook Association of Congregational and Christian Churches and Ministers was held at the Ashland Congregational Church with the ordination of William G. Brandt as a feature of the program.
50 Years Ago – Nov. 1, 1967
At conference — Presque Isle Civil defense and Public Safety Director Joseph A. Gagnon and Mrs. Gagnon left for the United States Civil Defense Council Conference held in Miami Beach, Florida. Maine was represented by four members of the Council, including Dr. Charles Steel of Lewiston representing the Civil Defense Medical Association.
New leaders — The Presque Isle Community Recreation Association held its annual meeting at the Community Center. The new officers and directors for 1968 elected were Gene Michaud, president; Dr. Donald Blackstone, vice president; James Schreiner, director; Athena Berry, secretary; Bruce Turgeon, director; and Ronald Carmichael, treasurer.
25 Years Ago – Oct. 28, 1992
Washburn boys advance — The Washburn Beavers boys cross-country team were the only Aroostook County school represented at the state meet, as they were the lone local team to finish among the top third during either the Eastern Maine Class, A, B or C events held at the University of Maine at Orono. Coach Richard Hartford’s boys team, which placed third in the County meet held at Caribou, ended up fifth in the Class C standings out of the 23 teams in competition.
Regional award — The Presque Isle Social Security office was awarded the 1992 Superior Public Service Award from regional headquarters in Boston. The award, presented annually to an office in the Maine – New Hampshire – Vermont area, recognizes performance in workload processing and public service. Staff member,s receiving this award from Robert Green regional commissioner in Boston, were manager David Mahoney, assistant manager Robert Ciccolella, Barbara McIntosh, Alicia DeBose, Michelle Holland, Sandra Haines, Lorrie Davenport, Colleen Cochran, Diane Duplessie, John McIntyre, Philip Ring, Trish Littlefield, Louise Britton and Elaine Nadeau.
