100 Years Ago – Nov. 7, 1917
Moved — The Postal Telegraph Office, which has been located in the J. D. Perry store for several years, has removed to the store in the Gould building formerly occupied by the Cook book store.
New building — The Fred E. Hall Co. took possession of their new office building, on Bangor St., on Friday, and are now prepared to better serve their patrons in a most convenient manner.
75 Years Ago – Oct. 29, 1942
Will retire — Omar Dow, 65, popular mail carrier on Rural Free Delivery Route Two out of Houlton for the past 37 years and oldest R. F. D. carrier in Aroostook County in point of service, will retire from the Postal Service. His retirement will complete 40 years of faithful service under four different postmasters in the Houlton office.
Potatoes — The pupils of the 12 grades of Houlton schools who picked potatoes during the recent three weeks recess earned a total of $13,473.44, as told when Supt. George J. Cumming released the figures. 583 pickers out of total school population of 1,600 volunteered for jobs and harvested 119,541 barrels… even first-graders worked.
50 Years Ago – Nov. 8, 1967
Ribbon cutting — Town Councilman Fred C. Greaves cut the ribbon marking the official opening of Petroleum Products’ new Texaco service station and restaurant on the North Road. At the ceremony were: David Harbison of Petroleum Products; Town Manager Walter Benson; Mr. and Mrs.Wayne Hannigan, managers of the new service station-restaurant; Mr. Greaves; Leland Ludwig Jr. of Petroleum Products; Jack Faulkner, administrative director of the Chamber of Commerce; and Leland Ludwig III of Petroleum Products.
Winner — Mrs. Lena Thompson is presented with a check for $1,000 as her grand prize in the Owner’s In The Store contest conducted at the C & G Foodliner in Houlton. The check represented the top amount offered in the contest sponsored by IGA stores.
25 Years Ago – Nov. 4, 1992
First birth — As construction of a new obstetrics/gynecology unit at Houlton Regional Hospital was completed, staff members from many of the hospital’s departments pitched in to move onto the new floor. Hillary Renee Riedel, seven pounds, three ounces, was the first baby born on the hospital’s new floor. Mom and Dad are Julie and Michael Riedel of Patten.
Mileage mania — Bruce A. Brinkworth, director of IWORC, and Tim Guiod, fitness manager of Houlton Health and Fitness Center, awarded gift certificates from the Nature’s Pantry of Houlton to Tim Humphrey and John Turner for achieving the most mileage on the treadmill and the rowing machine for September. Other winners are Heleana Nickerson on the stair climber and Tammi Hill on the stationary bicycle.
