100 Years Ago – Nov. 14, 1917
New position — Bert Cameron has accepted a position as head baker with Dent’s Bakery in Woodstock.
Guest speaker — Congressman Ira G. Hersey of Houlton was the speaker at the recent regular meeting of the Maine Club at Washington, D. C.
75 Years Ago – Nov. 5, 1942
Potato contest — The annual big potato contest conducted by the J. R. Harvey Company came to a close last week with more than 20 entries. First prize of $5 in war savings stamps was awarded to Shirley Ruth of Linneus whose entry weighed three pounds, five ounces. Harold R. Dickinson of Houlton won second award of $2 in war savings stamps with a potato weighing 3 pounds, 2 ounces.
New directors — At a special meeting of the Board of Directors of the Houlton Bus Company held last night, George H. Beatham was elected to the board and was named treasurer to fill the vacancy. A. R. Haas was also named to the board to fill a vacancy caused by the resignation of Miss Alice Lincoln. F. H. Totman continues as president of the company.
50 Years Ago – Nov. 15, 1967
Grant to Ricker — Unrestricted grants totaling $1 million are being distributed this week by the Sears-Roebuck Foundation under a continuing program of aid to privately supported colleges and universities, Robert Trickey, Houlton area representative of the foundation, presented a check to Ricker College President C. Worth Howard. Ricker is one of seven colleges and universities in Maine to share in grants.
Honored — Mrs. Edith Gray, principal at Bowdoin Street School and a teacher for 45 years, was guest of honor at an open house November 8 at the school.
25 Years Ago – Nov. 11, 1992
Open for business — Joe Devou of Houlton, a certified locksmith, recently began working out of his home on Foxcroft Road making keys, repairing locks, and sometimes responding to calls from people locked out of cars and houses.
Remembering fallen comrades — Betty Fraser, librarian at Cary Library, accepted the gift of a print of ‘Reflections’ from Ray Eastham, first vice-commander of American Legion Post #47, and Kent Sercerchi, commander of the post last Monday in the memory of Weston J. Langley, Harry McGuire III, and Stephen L. Porter, the three Houlton men who died in Vietnam War.
