HOULTON, Maine — An arrest made by an officer from the Houlton Police Department a few months ago did more than get drugs off the street.
Houlton Police Chief Tim Deluca told town councilors on Monday evening that on Feb 7, 2017, Officer Travis Smith pursued on foot and eventually apprehended an individual in Houlton.
Smith searched the man and found drugs and cash on him.
After he was sentenced by a judge, the judge awarded $1,000 in cash to the police department, which sometimes happens in such cases.
“This is very helpful to the police department,” said Deluca. “We have used the money in the past to buy equipment.”
In other business during their Monday meeting, councilors accepted the donation of $300 from Dan Jacobs to buy trees for the downtown. Councilor Jane Torres, who is also the executive director of the Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce, said that the donation will help replace some of the trees in Market Square that are not thriving. She said that the chamber has decided to use Jacobs’ money to buy different types of trees. The money will be enough to buy five trees.
