102 Years Ago – November 25, 1915

Railroad spur — The spur which the B & A had been building to Phair’s mill and factory had been completed. This made it very convenient for them to load their lumber and starch. Mr. Phair planned to build a potato house on this branch as well. 

New music store — The opening week of J. M. Story and Co’s. new store, a musical entertainment was furnished their patrons on a Player Piano. Music was furnished by an orchestra of five pieces.

75 Years Ago – November 19, 1942

Defense commander — By executive order of Governor Sumner Sewall, the City Council appointed Sidney Cook as commander of Presque Isle’s civilian defense set-up. Commander Cook announced that during the coming winter months, gas education will be stressed. Dr. Warren Unger had been appointed gas officer.

Washburn girl name Phi Beta Kappa at Bates — Edith Dahlgren, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Godfrey Dahlgren of Washburn, was one of nine seniors at Bates College to be named to Phi Beta Kappa at the recent elections. She was one of three from Maine to receive the honor.

50 Years Ago – November 22, 1967

Mechanic take course — Richard J. Murphy of Auburn, sales manager for the Allen Electrical and Equipment C., conducted a school of instruction on the automobile alternator. This training was sponsored by Farrar Brown Co. and was held at the Northern Maine Vocational Technical Institute Auto Service Building with the compliments of Ed Law and Harold Quass, auto service instructors. Murphy showed films and lectured on the theory and trouble diagnosis of alternating systems, as well as instructing the use of testing equipment on “live” engines in the shop.

25 Years Ago – November 18, 1992

Super skaters — Hillary Tompkins, the 16-year-old daughter of Jim and Pat of Presque Isle, and her skating partner, Mark Drouillard of Littleton, Colo., won the 1993 Southwestern Novice Ice Dance Championship held Nov. 4-5 in Denver, Colo. She had been skating competitively for 10 years and training in Denver under the guidance of former Olympian Carol Fox.

TAC title — The Athletic Congress Junior Olympic Cross-Country State Meet was held in Readfield Nov. 8, with Danielle Donovan of Presque Isle and the ACE Running Club seizing first place in the 13-14 youth girls division with a time of 16 minutes, 53 seconds on the 2.6-mile course. Other ACE runners who qualified for the regionals to be held at Sarasota Springs, N.Y. were Erica Dorsey (13-14 year-old age group,  24th place), Derrick Donovan (11-12 division, fourth place), Doug Carlisle (13-14 division, second place) and Norman Elliott (13-14 division, 22nd place).

Donation — Presque Isle Police Officer Tim McCue, instructor for the DARE program, accepted a $200 donation to the program from Little Caesars of Presque Isle. At the presentation with McCue were the pizza company’s mascot; Bradley Frank; owners Rob and Martha Frank; Walter Murphy, real estate manager for the restaurant chain; and Christa Fran. DARE is a drug awareness education program conducted in schools and supported by donations.
