102 Years Ago – December 2, 1915
Law office sold — W. R. Roix sold his law practice in Ashland, and decided to discontinue going to Ashland where he had appointments two days each week. He planned to devote all his time to his Presque Isle office.
In Portland — Mrs. M. L. . White went to Portland to attend a meeting of the executive board of the State Federation of Woman’s Clubs.
75 Years Ago – November 26, 1942
AVRR manager — G. B. Hallett was appointed manager of operations of the Aroostook Valley Railroad. Hallett’s railroad career began with the Canadian Pacific Railway in June 1911, at Aroostook, New Brunswick. In August 1914, he joined the Canadian Army and served overseas in Great Britain, France, Belgium and Germany. He renewed his duties with the CPR as superintendent, which title he held until this appointment.
Howard Smith elected president of Maine Lumber Dealers — A. Howard Smith of Presque Isle was elected president of the Maine Lumber Dealers Association. Other officers elected were Kilton Andrews of Portland and Richard Cenico of Bangor, vice presidents, and Ralph E. Jordan of Lewiston, secretary-treasurer.
50 Years Ago – November 29, 1967
Business manager — The appointment of Mr. Arthur J. Mraz as Business Manager of the Aroostook State College was announced by President Clifford O. T. Wieden. Mr. Mraz relinquished his responsibilities as Assistant Professor of Science, as of January 22, 1967, to assume his new position.
Social Security head — Louis Pepin, officer-in-charge of the Rockland, Maine Branch Office of the Social Security Administration, was named manager of the Presque Isle District Office, to succeed Robert J. DePorter. The appointment of Pepin was announced in Boston by Walter Mode, Regional Director of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare.
New school — Over six hundred people attended the dedication ceremony at the new Washburn District High School. The dedication, held in the new Washburn High School Gymnasium, started when master of ceremonies for the event Willis El Laskey, chairman of the Board of Directors of SAD 45 (Washburn, Perham, Wade), gave his welcoming speech. The Washburn High School band played the National Anthem directed by music teacher Waldron Babbidge.
25 Years Ago – November 25, 1992
Award-winning auto — After five years of painstaking work and several local exhibitions, a 1937 Chevrolet convertible owned by Milton Adelman of Mars Hill earned first place in its class during an Oct. 10 antique automobile exhibition in Hershey, Penn. The car, which took first place in Presque Isle and Owl’s Head, was restored to authentic condition under the direction of Greg Roderick at his Presque Isle body shop, Northern Auto Body. The car sports a medium greyed-green body, tan roof, chrome accents and whitewall tires.
Award winners — The Presque Isle High School Future Farmers Association chapter was named the recipient of a national safety award during the National FFA Convention held at Kansas City, Mo., Nov. 12-14. Darin Drollinger of the Equipment Manufacturers Institute congratulated chapter safety representatives Scott Pangburn and Travis Sharp and chapter advisor Ray Chelewski.
