Owl teams come away with
split during weekend series
The University of Maine at Presque Isle basketball teams played home games over the weekend, with both the women and the men splitting their contests.
The UMPI women eased past Fisher College of Boston, Mass. Sunday, 70-31, with every member of the Owl roster reaching the scoring column. Rashell Saucier of Washburn had 14 points, six rebounds and four assists to lead the team, while Emily Pelletier notched 10 points and five assists and Liron Albag nine points and five rebounds.
The Owl defense limited Fisher to just 17-percent shooting from the floor.
On Saturday, UMPI dropped a 64-58 decision to SUNY-Canton. Saucier’s 17 points led the way, while Pelletier had 13 and Renee Moore eight points and nine rebounds.
Shannon LaFave paced the victorious Roos with 16 points.
The UMPI men were beaten by Fisher Sunday, 106-77, despite 20 points and 10 rebounds from sophomore forward Patrick Manifold.
Ronald Spencer came off the bench to fire in 17 points, including four three-pointers, while Cliff McDonald tallied 15 points and Chris Coffin of Presque Isle added 12 on four three-point field goals for the Owls.
Casey Pursell and Christaan Hammond had 22 and 21 points, respectively, for Fisher.
The Owls downed SUNY-Canton the previous afternoon, 90-73. Manifold had another solid performance with 25 points and 12 rebounds. McDonald had 18 points to go along with 10 boards, while Kyle Corrigan of Caribou had 23 points and eight assists. He went 17 for 19 from the foul line.
Tony Valentin paced the Roos with 20 points.
In games played at UM-Fort Kent Thursday, the UMPI women beat the Bengals, 61-58. Megan Korhonen of Littleton hit a pair of free throws with five seconds left to secure the comeback victory as the Owls had trailed by 11 points at intermission.
Saucier scored a career-high 24 points and Korhonen finished with 10 points for the winners.
Jenn Colpitts scored 23 points to lead UMFK.
The Owl men were defeated that same evening, 78-66. UMPI trailed by 16 points at halftime and stormed back to within three, but could get no closer. Corrigan’s 14 points paced the Owls. Manifold chipped in with 13 points.
Emiliano Void scored 22 for the Bengals.
The UMPI women now hold a 6-9 overall record and are 4-1 in Sunrise Conference play. The Owl men are 3-12 overall and 1-4 in the conference.
