HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians have received significant funding through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Indian Community Development Block Grant program that will help continue work they are doing in their housing department.
U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King announced recently in a written statement that the tribe had received $141,013 through the program.
April Reynolds, director of the Maliseet Housing Department, said that the money will fund ongoing programs in the housing department, as well as salaries and maintenance of the buildings. She was pleased that the tribe had again received the funding.
Collins and King also said they were happy about the news.
“Indian Community Development Block Grants offer crucial assistance to tribal communities working to maintain and improve housing, living environments, and economic opportunities on their lands,” the senators said in the joint statement. “This investment will help support projects that provide safe, affordable housing for members of the Houlton Band of Maliseet.”
The ICDBG program assists grant recipients with affordable housing, suitable living environments, and economic opportunities, primarily for low- and moderate-income individuals and families.
