Norman Ulderec Hubert

HOULTON, Maine – Norman Ulderec Hubert, 92, passed away on December 2, 2017, while in a local nursing facility. Norman or Norm or “Red” as he was known to family and friends, was born on March 31, 1925, to Anna (Poirier) and Pete Hubert in Waterville.

Growing up, Norm attended parochial schools in Waterville where he participated in many athletic and musical activities. Like so many of his contemporaries, members of America’s Greatest Generation, he dutifully served his country in World War II in the Pacific theater, stationed on the island of Saipan as part of the US Army Air Forces.
After returning from military service, he attended college at the University of Maine where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. His career was varied, ranging from engineer to farmer to home manufacturer and home inspector. Common to all of his endeavors was a love of finding inventive solutions to technical problems.
Norm had a lifelong love of sports, participating in football, basketball and track as a youth in Waterville. He also was an avid follower of college and professional sports of all kinds, especially his Patriots, but he particularly enjoyed watching local high school athletics. He looked forward to fall and winter when he could regularly attend the Houlton High School Shires basketball games.
Norm also enjoyed music and was a member of the church choir and the Houlton Community chorus. He always looked forward to attending McGill’s Community Band concerts to socialize with his neighbors and listen to the music.
Above all he was devoted to his family and to his Catholic faith. He was a communicant of St. Mary of the Visitation Church where he took on an active role in the church through various projects where he could make use of his professional experience. He also supported the community as a Fourth Degree member of the Houlton Council of the Knights of Columbus.
Norman is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Phyllis (Gray) Hubert of Houlton; son, Jeffrey and his wife, Anita, of Littleton; daughter, Ann Wilson of Corinna; son, Tim of Dunstable, MA; four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren; a brother, C. Donald and his wife, Gloria of Waterville.
Calling hours will be held at 12 – 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 9, 2017, at St. Mary of the Visitation Church, Military Street, Houlton, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. with Father Kent Ouellette celebrant. A reception will be held immediately after the service in St. Anthony’s Hall at the church for all friends and family.
