GILMAY SMITH, HOULTON – Gilmay Smith, age 85, went to be with her Lord on Friday, December 8, 2017, due to complications after surgery at a Bangor hospital.
Gilmay was a strong lady who in her later years endured many medical procedures and one and a half years traveling to Presque Isle three times a week for dialysis. Gilmay was born on February 5, 1932, in Stockholm, the daughter of Wilfred and Evelyn (Chasse) Nightingale.
She worked as a stitcher at several shoe and glove factories, and also sewed gloves from home for many years. She loved traveling to Bangor with family and friends, eating out, and watching hours of “Murder She Wrote.” She will be remembered for her sharp memory, her with and laughter. Even a couple days before her death she was reciting the poem “The House That Jack Built” without missing a line.
She was predeceased by her parents Wilfred and Evelyn Nightingale, her husband of 52 years, Eugene Smith, her infant daughter, Vicki, and a sister, Mildred Folsom. She is survived by her two daughters, Karen Folsom and her husband, Roger, Nance Manton and her husband, Wayne, all of Houlton, a grandson, Rob, and her great-granddaughter, Lexi Smith, a granddaughter, Kelly York, and her husband, Tony, and a great-granddaughter, Maren York, all of Bangor. She also leaves behind two sisters, Dorothy Leighton of Houlton, Patsy Nightingale of Bangor, three brothers, Milfred Nightingale of Connecticut, Robert Nightingale of Houlton, Gary Nightingale of Bangor, as well as several nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed by her family and all her friends at Military St. Apartments where she resided.
A special thank you to all of you that brought her coffee at 5:30 a.m. or brought her food, shopped for her, gave her rides wherever she needed to go and genuinely loved her.
At her request there will be no services. Those who wish to remember her in a special way may make gifts in her memory payable to the Houlton Humane Society or to a charity of choice in c/o Dunn Funeral Home, 11 Park St., Houlton, ME 04730.
