WOODLAND, Maine — A single-vehicle crash Dec. 27 on the Woodland Center Road has left one woman dead.

According to Maine State Police Sgt. Chad Fuller, Judith Hewitt, 72, of Perham did not survive the accident that took place at approximately 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Fuller said in a press release that Trooper Pescitelli received a report that a passerby had seen an SUV on its side, with the driver unresponsive. Pescitelli responded, as did emergency medical services.

It is unclear, said Fuller, what caused Hewitt to lose control of her vehicle and drive it into a snowbank. After hitting the snowbank, the vehicle rolled over on its side, he said.

Caribou Police, Caribou Fire and Ambulance and the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.

The crash is under investigation.
