The high school sports season has been put on hold thanks to the recent winter storm, with events originally scheduled for Thursday and Friday being postponed. Several contests are slated for Saturday, but even some of those also could be threatened by the storm’s aftermath.
Friday’s basketball postponements include Houlton at Presque Isle girls, Van Buren at Central Aroostook girls, Hodgdon at Fort Fairfield boys, Fort Kent at Central Aroostook boys, Wisdom boys and girls at Easton, East Grand boys and girls at Highview Christian Academy and Southern Aroostook boys and girls at Shead.
The Presque Isle hockey team’s game against John Bapst in Bangor also has been scratched.
According to SAD 1 Athletic Director Mark White, the Houlton at Presque Isle girls’ game will now be played Jan. 17, while the Presque Isle at Houlton girls’ game, originally set for Jan. 17, will take place Jan. 31. The game times for both dates are 7 p.m.
Heather Bradbury, the athletic director for SAD 42, said the Van Buren at Central Aroostook girls game will now be held Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 5:30 p.m. and the Fort Kent at Central Aroostook boys game is now slated for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17.
The Wisdom at Easton girls and boys doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, according to Steve Shaw, Easton’s athletic director.
One of Friday’s scheduled games has been moved back a day. SAD 20 Athletic Administrator Tim Watt said the Hodgdon at Fort Fairfield boys game will now be played 6 p.m. Saturday.
Saturday’s schedule also has the Caribou girls and boys heading to Pittsfield for games against Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference foe Maine Central Institute. The girls play at 1:30 p.m. and the boys at 4:30 p.m.
Belfast, another KVAC school, takes the long bus trip to Presque Isle for a doubleheader. The girls’ game is scheduled for 3 p.m. and the boys play at 4:30 p.m.
The Central girls travel to Houlton Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in a battle of two undefeated Class C North squads. The Houlton girls are 6-0 and the top-ranked team, while Central of East Corinth is 8-0 and currently third.
The Central Aroostook teams travel to Ashland for a twinbill, which begins with the girls’ matchup at 5:30 p.m. The boys’ game is slated for 7 p.m.
Other girls’ basketball games Saturday include Fort Fairfield at Katahdin and Fort Kent at Washburn, both tipping off at 3:30 p.m.
The Houlton-Hodgdon-Southern Aroostook and Katahdin Black Hawks hockey team takes to the ice Saturday at 1 p.m. as they host Messalonskee.
The Caribou wrestling team has not had a home meet yet this season, but that changes Saturday as they host a tournament beginning at 1 p.m. Bucksport, Calais, Ellsworth, Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln, PCHS of Guilford and PVHS of Howland are all expected to compete.
Cancellations announced earlier this week include the Nordic freestyle meet scheduled at Madawaska Friday and the alpine meet at Bigrock in Mars Hill Saturday. Friday’s Nordic meet was cancelled due to the storm and predicted wind chill temps, while Saturday’s Alpine meet was postponed due to the predicted extremely low wind chill temps.
