100 Years Ago – Jan. 9, 1918

    Dissolution The well known insurance firm of Donnell and Peabody have dissolved partnership, and the business will be conducted in the future by F. A. Peabody.  Mr. Donnell who retires has been connected with the insurance business for many years, , continuing the business until he entered the partnership with Mr. Peabody in 1906. Mr. Peabody is too well known to need further comment by the Times, but the same good business judgement that he has used in the different lines in which he has been engaged will continue in the insurance business, which means success. 

    For sale B. B. McIntyre and T. C. S. Berry left here for Augusta, to attend the hearing before the public Utilities Com., on the sale of the Merritt lighting plant to the Houlton Water Co..

75 Years Ago – Jan. 14, 1943

    Performs in Boston Miss Vera  Bostrom, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. E. G. Bostrom of this town, now a student at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, was one of the performers at the Student Recital held at Jordan Hall, Boston. Miss Bostrom performed the Adagio and Allegretta  from the Sonata in D. Minor by Beethoven and also acted as an accompanist.

    New Company Shean Accounting Service, Inc., is the name of the new organization recently formed in Houlton and is an organization to perform general accounting for the public and will specialize in municipal audits and Federal Taxes. President and Treasurer of the new corporation is Fred A. Shean, C.P.A. of Houlton who has been closely connected with this kind of work for the last 24 years.

50 Years Ago – Jan. 10, 1968

    Should make a move Town manager Albert Paulger advised the Town Council that a decision had been made to move the Ambulance Corps into the new Fire-Police Station.

    Sold The sale of the four-story Dunn Building on Main Street was completed, with the new owners being Walter and Thornton Peabody.

25 Years Ago – Jan. 13, 1993

   Award Gail Jackins, a native of Houlton, has won a Golden Apple award for excellence in teaching at Lewiston High School. Jackins has been teaching special education English at Lewiston High for four years and won the award last year as well. She is the daughter of Rose Marie and Gerald Jackins of Houlton.

   New stamps — Elvis sold out in two and a half hours last Friday, but that’s nothing  new for him. Followers of the late rock and roll icon flocked to the Houlton Post Office at noon to buy Elvis Presley stamps on the first day that they were issued. Maddie Lee of Houlton waited for almost an hour to be the first person to buy Elvis stamps. James Young, also of Houlton, waited a half an hour to get stamps for him and his son, even though her said he was not a fan.
