Since the big blizzard of two or three weeks ago — which, by the way, dropped 14 inches of snow on our area of The County — it seems that no one is going anywhere, except maybe to the store and the post office.
It seems that the only activity comes from all the deer that have suddenly decided to arrive in my backyard and, in fact, the whole neighborhood. The other morning, quite early, around 9 a.m., there were six deer out in the swampy area near my barn and they stayed there at least an hour, grazing on the bushes and trees there.
About two days ago there were 12 of them, walking very easily on the crust that had developed after the rain and apparently following a trail they had made; this takes them down to the Woodland Heights area and also to Dyer Brook.
At noontime recently, there were six deer on my front lawn looking over to Susie’s house. Of course, a car or two slowed down to watch them, and away they went.
I still have lots of small birds and and a couple of blue jays. Woodpeckers seem to have left the area and, to my knowledge, no one has seen a cardinal yet, though still keep looking.
A couple of big gray squirrels have made their appearance, but I do not encourage them by giving them sunflower seeds. They hang about the feeders for a while then dash off.
Hopefully, there soon be more interesting news from the small, quiet town of Island Falls.
