ELLSWORTH, Maine – Grants of up to $10,000 from Maine Community Foundation’s People of Color Fund are available to organizations that are led by and serve people of Native American, Latino, African, Arab and Asian descent.
The grant program is designed to help people of color in Maine achieve greater equity. Grants to nonprofit programs, or organizations, focus on three areas: addressing health disparities, supporting youth and improving economic opportunities.
Last year the People of Color Fund awarded 21 grants that totaled $152,349. They included:
— $7,500 to the Multilingual & Multicultural Center, Portland Public Schools, to establish Multilingual Parent University, designed to increase parent involvement in schools and improve student academic success.
— $7,500 to Wabanaki Public Health, to support youth councils that will develop projects related to public health and to host an intertribal youth leadership summit.
— $7,500 to Sustainable Livelihoods Relief Organization, to train young leaders of color to support development of farm and food businesses and improve engagement with Maine’s larger food systems network.
