The University of Maine at Presque Isle men’s basketball team had its three-game winning streak halted Sunday, falling at home to Fisher College, 81-65.
UMPI had won the first meeting between the two teams played on Dec. 10 in Boston by a score of 80-72, but in this one, the Owls trailed by nine points at intermission and couldn’t recover. They are now 10-11 entering Wednesday’s 7 p.m. home game against UM-Fort Kent.
Wilburn Griffiths led UMPI with 16 points, while Deandre Duncombe and Maurice Harris contributed 15 and 10, respectively. Kyle Snowden’s 21 points and nine assists were tops for Fisher.
On Thursday, the Owls prevailed on the road at UM-Augusta, 97-84. Five UMPI players scored in double figures, led by Harris with 28 points. Kevin Collins (19), Anthony Chacho (14), Duncombe (14) and Kim Collins (12) were the other scoring leaders. Chacho had a team-best 16 rebounds and Harris added 10.
UMA’s Quinn Mitchell II led all scorers with 30 points.
The Owl women dropped both games against UMA and Fisher. In the 77-42 defeat in Augusta Thursday, Marissa Reagle had an impressive statistical line for UMPI with nine points, 12 rebounds, four assists and five steals.
In Sunday’s home loss, which was by a score of 65-35, Teagan Laweryson scored 12 points and Kendra Silvers netted 11. Emilia Churchill chipped in with team highs in rebounds (seven) and assists (four). Jessy Dickison and Silvers grabbed six rebounds each for the Owls, who are now 3-15. They next host UM-Fort Kent on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
The previous evening, UMPI beat UMM in overtime, 71-67. Kevin Collins hit a 3-pointer to give the Owls the lead with 28 seconds remaining in the extra session and Harris blocked a shot by the Clippers’ Darius Clark to preserve the lead. Clark had sent the game into overtime with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer.
Duncombe had 23 points and Collins 18 to pace the Owl attack.
The UMPI women survived a late comeback attempt by the Clippers last Wednesday in a 64-59 victory, Coach Gavin Kane’s Owl squad avenged an early-season loss by going up 35-20 at halftime, allowing UMM to get within three points with 37 seconds remaining and then using two late free throws by Jessy Dickison to survive.
Emilia Churchill, a sophomore from Washburn, led the Owls with 14 points, six rebounds and six assists. Dickison, a senior from Houlton, finished with 13 points and seven rebounds, Marissa Reagle, a freshman from Seattle, Washington, contributed 10 points, five rebounds and six assists and Chelsea Winiarski, a junior from Danforth, added 10 points.
Caitlyn Lyons paced UMM with 26 points.
On Thursday, UMPI lost at UMA by a lopsided score of 77-42. Reagle had nine points, 12 rebounds and four assists in the defeat.
