FAIRFIELD, Maine — The Maine Elks Association hosted the state championship round for the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Hoop Shoot foul shooting contest on Sunday, Jan. 28 at the Lawrence Junior High School gymnasium.
Four youth had earned the right to compete at the state event after winning at three previous levels — the local school or recreation program’s foul shooting contest, the Presque Isle Elks Lodge 1954 competition at the University of Maine at Presque Isle Jan. 13 and the Northern District Elks’ foul shooting contest in Bangor Jan. 14.
Blayne Tardif, the 8-year-old daughter of Jaime and Rob Tardif of Mapleton, and Faith Sjoberg, the 13-year-old daughter of Kevin and Sue Sjoberg of Presque Isle, both captured state championship honors in their respective age groups.
Both have now earned the right to compete in the New England Region Hoop Shoot contest to be held March 24 in Westbrook.
For the third consecutive year, Sjoberg earned the Alan W. Richard Trophy, which is awarded to the highest scoring girls shooter in the championship contest. She made 23 of her 25 attempts.
Wesley LaPointe, 12-year-old son of Travis LaPointe of Caribou and Farrah Boucher of Presque Isle, and Amelia Godin, 11-year-old daughter of Steven and Carla Godin of Caribou, received trophies for second and third place, respectively, in their age divisions.
