Washburn teams had winning season
Washburn District High School held its winter sports awards program April 4. Athletic Director Ron Ericson introduced the coaches and thanked everyone for their support and help and congratulated everyone for their success. This was a very good year for the Beavers with a sportsmanship award, a County championship and a state championship.

Ericson and girls’ basketball coaches Mike Carlos and Tammy Tatlock presented the Cochran family with Felicia Cochran’s jersey. Cochran, a former WDHS athlete and 2010 graduate, passed away due to a vehicle accident earlier this winter.
State Representative Alex Willette and State Senator Troy Jackson congratulated the teams and delivered sentiments from the legislature.
Tatlock presented awards for girls volleyball. Players receiving a certificate and a pin were Taylor Thompson, manager Caitlyn Roix, Nicole Olson, Amanda Libby, Rebecca Campbell, Meghan Saucier, Maegan Fitzpatrick, Olivia Doody and Carmen Bragg. Named Outstanding Player was Rebecca Campbell. Named Rookie of the Year was Bragg. Chosen as all-tournament was Campbell. Team members received plaques for their second consecutive Aroostook County Championship.

Tatlock also presented awards for girls JV basketball. Receiving certificates were Breanna Roman, Kennedy Churchill, Taylor Thompson, Carsyn Koch, Amanda Libby, Meghan Saucier, Rayah Saucier, Olivia Doody, Maegan Fitzpatrick, and Nicole Olson. The JV MVP was Koch. Named Most Improved Player was Thompson.
Boys volleyball awards were presented by coach George McLaughlin. Receiving a certificate and pin were Jordan McLaughlin, Mason Turner, Kyle McLaughlin, Kyle Hews, Nick Bragg, Chris Farley, Garth Kinney and Stephen Kinney. Named Most Outstanding Player and chosen to the all-star team was Jordan McLaughlin. Named Most Improved Player was Turner.
Mike Hartford presented certificates to JV boys’ basketball players. Receiving certificates were Mike Forand, Sean Sperrey, Justin Farley, Andrew McLaughlin, Keegan Page, Justin Thompson, Anthony Singletary, Anthony Henderson, Chris Farley, Phillip Helton, Kyle McLaughlin, Mackenzie Hartford and Ethan Pendexter. Forand was named team MVP. Henderson received the Coach’s Award.

ON DISPLAY — This backboard will be displayed in the “Doc” Albert Gymnasium at Washburn District High School, highlighting the names of the players on the Class D state champion Washburn girls basketball team.
Cheering awards were presented by coach Heather Bragg. Receiving letters were Courtney Cannon, Tanya Tarbox, Shanae Burtt, and Amanda Preston. Receiving pins were Hillary Jackson, manager Kalle Griffin, Michaela Bragg, Breanna Hyde, Tia Dee, Shanae Burtt, Garth Kinney and Nikkie Richardson. Named Most Valuable cheerleaders were Bragg and Richardson. Named Most Improved was Griffin. Receiving the Coach’s Award was Roix. Earning third-year plaques were Bragg and Hyde.
Randy Norsworthy presented awards to the varsity boys’ basketball team. Receiving a letter was Mike Forand. Receiving pins were managers Owen James and Dakota Koch and players Sean Sperrey, Justin Farley, Andrew McLaughlin, Kyle McLaughlin, Zach Davis, Kyle Huston, Mitchell Worcester, Jordan McLaughlin, Nick Bragg and Mason Turner. Named to the All-Aroostook team were Mitchell Worcester and Jordan McLaughlin. Third-year plaques were presented to Mason Turner, Kyle Huston, Jordan McLaughlin and Dakota Koch. Named co-MVPs were Worcester and Jordan McLaughlin.

Named All Aroostook were Bragg and Campbell. The MVP was Campbell. The Coach’s Awards were presented to Sjoberg and Meghan Saucier. The Rookie of the Year Award went to Bragg.

VOLLEYBALL — Jordan McLaughlin, left, was named MVP and Mason Turner Most Improved Player on the boys’ volleyball team at Washburn District High School’s awards program held April 4.
Athletic Director Ron Ericson presented members of the girls’ basketball team with their championship banners and their “backboard” to be placed in the gym. The girls also received placques in recognition of their state championship season. Campbell also received a ball from WZON as the Player of the Tournament for Class D.
Hillary Jackson received a varsity fleece for earning her eighth varsity letter.
Campbell also received a plaque and placard for making the 1,000-Point Club. She finished her career with 1,365 points to become the top female scorer in school history.
