UMFK Bengals take down Owls at UMPI

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The University of Maine at Fort Kent mens basketball team went on a 23-8 run during a 10-minute stretch to end the first half and defeated in-state rival University of Maine at Presque Isle, 82-64, on Wednesday evening. 

UMFK has won 12 games in a row and moved to 18-6 on the year. UMPI dropped to 10-12 with the loss.

The Bengals led for all 40 minutes of action, but the UMPI Owls hung tough for the first 10 minutes and trailed just 17-15.

In the second half, the Owls got the lead down to 51-40, with a little more than 13 minutes to play. A 20-9 Bengal run, however, pushed their lead to 71-49, the largest of the night. Johnathan Caldwell, who hit six from beyond the arc on the night, sank three consecutive 3-pointers during that run.

UMFK held UMPI to just 33 percent shooting and 9–33 from three-point land. The Bengals also forced 20 turnovers.

Caldwell’s 22 led the Bengal’s scoring and teammate Bobby Syvanthong had 19 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. Anthony Knight scored 21, on 9-13 shooting, seven rebounds and six steals.

UMPI was led by Freshman Deandre Duncombe who finished with 16 points and seven rebounds.

The Bengals next travel to Manhattan, New York, Saturday, to take on the Berkeley College of New York. The UMPI man are set to host Unity College, also on Saturday.
