Salvation Army has no chance to catch up
To the editor:
After a long winter of ever increasing fuel oil bills, many of us can take a deep breath and start planning and saving for next season’s heating costs.
Not so with the Salvation Army. They are still trying to catch up with the assistance they provided this past winter. For those families who find themselves in positions of unemployment, under-employment, family crisis or just plain victims of the poor economy and ever rising costs, the Salvation Army is a life line.
The sad fact is, the money isn’t always there. They can’t help everybody, they often have to turn away applicants. Small children bundle in front of the electric stove in the winter to stay warm because Mom and Dad can’t afford the oil bill and all the benefits that were out there are already used up.
If you would like to help the Salvation Army catch up with the winter’s bills, and start preparing for the next season, I can think of no better time than now to donate. It’s hard in the winter, we all have to survive heating oil, Christmas, the higher light bills, all the extra expenses that remind us we live in northern Maine. But now we should start to see a little easing of these pressures and now would be a great time to support this organization.
Your donations can be mailed to the Salvation Army at 12 Court Street, Houlton, Maine 04730 or dropped off at the Corp headquarters. And don’t forget to shop at the Salvation Army Thrift Store, they have some wonderful bargains and are a tremendous asset to the community.
