Poor road conditions lead to milk truck rollover

MONTICELLO, Maine — Poor road conditions early Monday morning resulted in a Houlton Farms Dairy milk truck overturning on U.S. Route 1 in Monticello.

According to Cpl. Dennis Quint of the Maine State Police, Brian Little, 37, of Houlton was driving north on U.S. Route 1 in a 2009 Sterling box truck filled with dairy products at about 3:45 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle.

“The truck started to slide to the right due to slush and ice on the roadway,” Cpl. Quint said. “The truck slid into the breakdown lane, into the snow bank on the side of the road and rolled onto its left side.”

The operator was able to get out of the vehicle and was taken to Houlton Regional Hospital for non-serious injuries in a private vehicle. Both north and south bound lanes of Route 1 were blocked for about 45 minutes while the truck was turned over.

Representatives of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection responded to the scene due to hazardous fluids leaking from the truck. Staffers with the Maine Department of Transportation assisted in stopping traffic while the truck was removed.

Speed was not believed to be a factor in the accident, according to police. The driver was wearing a seatbelt. He was not charged.
