CARIBOU, Maine — Snow and cold temperatures over the weekend led to slow travel and the cancellation of some events in Aroostook County.
Additional snow expected midweek could lead to more of the same, according to meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Caribou.
In Houlton, organizers of the Moosestompers Weekend had to cancel or reschedule events on Friday and Saturday due to the cold. Many events were moved to Sunday afternoon, when it was warmer, but light snow fell throughout the day.
Tony Mignone, meteorologist at the NWS Caribou office, said that the high on Friday registered at 30 degrees, while the low was 1 degree below zero. On Saturday, the high temperature was 8 degrees, with the low at 9 degrees below zero.
A storm that passed through on Sunday brought 5.8 inches to the Caribou area, with lesser amounts recorded elsewhere in The County.
Another quick-moving storm is expected to start late Wednesday morning, following a diagonal path from Maine’s southwest corner up through the northeast, with the state’s south-central corridor expected to see the heaviest amounts of snow, according to the NWS.
Snow totals are predicted to change, but early estimates clock inland metropolitan cities — including Bangor — in the 7 to 10 inch range, according to the weather service. Lesser amounts will collect along the coastline, where the precipitation is expected to mix with rain, forecasters said.
Mignone said the storm could drop 7 inches of snow on most of Aroostook with as much as 9 inches in the southern part of The County and 6 inches up in the St. John Valley.
