The University of Maine at Presque Isle men’s basketball team split a pair of games and the women lost their only game played last week.
For the men, the Owls were up by two points midway through the first half against UM-Fort Kent last Wednesday, but the visiting Bengals went on a 16-3 run to take control and claim an 82-64 victory.
Deandre Duncombe had 16 points and seven rebounds to lead UMPI, while Maurice Harris had 15 points and six boards. Anthony Chacho (15 points and six rebounds) and Wilburn Griffiths (10 points) were other statistical leaders for the Owls.
Jonathon Caldwell scored 22 points and Anthony Knight 21 for UM-Fort Kent.
On Saturday, the Owls bounced back for a 78-56 victory over Unity College, also played at Wieden Gymnasium.
Kevin Collins was 8 for 12 from the field and finished with 22 points to lead the winning offense. Duncombe had 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists, while Harris and Griffiths added 13 points each.

The Owls are now 11-12 with two games remaining. They are home against St. Joseph’s (Vermont) Saturday, with game time at 3 p.m. The final game is against the UM-Fort Kent Bengals Feb. 15 in Fort Kent.
The UMPI women’s record dropped to 3-16 after a 62-48 loss to UM-Fort Kent Friday. The Owls’ Rhylee Wright was dominant in the loss as she poured in 31 points to go along with 13 rebounds. She was 8 for 12 from the foul line. However, no other UMPI player scored more than five points.
The Bengals boasted a balanced attack with four players in double figures, led by Savanna Jankowski and Tate Dolley with 14 points each.
The Owls will host St. Joseph’s (Vermont) Saturday at 1 p.m. They close out the season on Feb. 15 with a 1 p.m. rematch against the Bengals in Fort Kent.
