Today is the final day of the regular season for boys and girls basketball teams as local squads make one final push to adjust their standings for the playoffs. On the off chance that not all of the games are played, Friday has been set aside as a makeup day for teams.
The postseason begins Tuesday, Feb. 13, and Wednesday, Feb. 14, with preliminary playoffs for several teams. Others will have the luxury of earning a first-round bye directly to Bangor for the tournament.
Make-up basketball games from Wednesday are planned as follows: Washburn at Easton girls, 6 p.m.; Central Aroostook at Fort Kent boys, 7 p.m.; Hodgdon at Houlton girls, 7 p.m.; and Katahdin at Southern Aroostook girls, 7 p.m.
Regularly-scheduled games for Thursday are: Van Buren at East Grand for a doubleheader, girls at 5 p.m. and boys at 6:30; Houlton at Calais boys, 6:30 p.m.; Caribou at Presque Isle boys, 7 p.m.; Easton at Fort Fairfield boys, 7 p.m.; and Southern Aroostook at Katahdin boys, 7 p.m.
Thursday’s schedule also includes a make-up alpine ski meet at Bigrock Ski Area in Mars Hill beginning at 4 p.m.
The only game played Wednesday was in Presque Isle, as the Wildcat girls used a strong fourth quarter to defeat the Vikings, 60-48.
Presque Isle outscored Caribou 26-14 in the pivotal period, with Emily Wheaton (14 points) and Madison Jandreau (nine on three 3-pointers) providing a bulk of the offense. The score was tied at 34 after three quarters.
Wheaton finished with 26 points, while Chrissy Skidgel had 12, 10 of which came in the first half, for the Vikes. Teammate Madison Michaud drained three 3-pointers, all coming in succession in the third quarter as the teams exchanged leads multiple times.
Searra Herbert tallied 14 points while Alexis Rodriguez scored 12 and Taylor Labreck eight for Caribou.
The teams combined for 16 3-pointers, with PI hitting 11 and Caribou five. The Wildcats finished the regular season with a 13-5 record and the Vikings ended up 8-10.
