HOULTON, Maine — Fishermen young and old braved the cold temperatures and wind chills to participate in the annual Moosestompers Ice Fishing Derby Saturday, Feb. 3, and Sunday, Feb. 4.
Nickerson Lake, Drew Lake and Mill Pond were the three bodies of water selected for this year’s event. Fisherman brought their prize catches to Nana’s Place on Military Street in Houlton to be measured.
New this year was a free children’s derby for youth under the age of 16 who caught their fish on Nickerson Lake. Traps were provided and holes were drilled for youth to participate. Gage McCrum was the top youth fisherman.
In the trout category, Al Cowperthwaite was first; Joel Graham was second; and Jon Fraser, third.
In the pickerel category, Steven Rouse was the top angler winning both first and third. Fraser was second.
In the togue division, Darren Crane was the top fisherman, while Tony Whittaker was second and Levi Prosser was third.
For perch, Chuck Jones finished first, followed by Randy Kneeland in second. Third place honors also were bestowed, but the winner’s name was not legible.
