I received a nice letter from Clayton Varney, former resident of Island Falls, now residing in Texas with daughter, Cheryl Sandquist. He says that he still misses all his friends here and throughout The County. He has had Betty and Chris Bowers as visitors, plus is expecting his sister, Leitha Porter (from Sherman) to visit soon. His son, Calvin, who lives in Concord, N.H., also plans on coming to stay for a week or so, probably also to get away from the miserable cold weather that we all have had up North here.
It seems that just about every day we have had snow and the plows have certainly been kept busy. My furnace stopped one afternoon but, after a call to the oil company, it was soon taken care of.
I have had a good time watching the deer wading very carefully through all the snow in my backyard as they make a trail towards the cedar trees, where they then commence to eat their fill. I have two of them that like to take a nap in the p.m. over next to the woods, where they will lie very quietly for several hours, until it is time to eat again. At suppertime they appear right by my back door to eat all the bread crumbs I have put out for them.
By that time the birds have more or less gone to roost for the night, so there are no distractions to disturb the deer. Between the deer and the birds I keep fairly busy keeping them fed.
There is not much in the way of activity here in Island Falls. I guess everyone is too busy keeping the snow out of their yards and waiting for the next storm to dump some more of the white stuff.
