WASHINGTON, D.C. and HOULTON — Jurors for the 2018 Congressional Art Competition for Maine’s 2nd District recently chose contest winners, and named a Houlton High School junior second runner-up.
Lizzie Dunn earned the honor for her drawing and illustration “Sense of Chaos,” a close-up portrait of a young female’s face.
“Each year I’m thrilled and impressed by the talents of Mainers from high schools across our state for this competition,” said Rep. Bruce Poliquin in a press statement announcing the winners.
Isobel Straub, a senior at Rangeley Lakes Regional School, won the contest for her photograph “Wait,” depicting a girl perched in a clothes dryer. Straub’s work will be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel hallway to the U.S. Capitol for the next year.
All of the Maine 2nd District top participants — Straub and Dunn, along with Pauline Han, Cara Hu, Jasmine Weiang Li and Yuqing Mao — are invited to a reception at the Blaine House on May 14 to recognize their outstanding artwork.
Jurors, selected by the Maine Arts Commission, choose the winning artists. Winners are offered a scholarship to Maine College of Art.
The Congressional Art Competition started in 1982 to provide an opportunity for young people to demonstrate their artistic abilities and talent. Each spring, students submit artwork and the winner’s pieces are hung in the halls of the U.S. Capitol.
