101 Years Ago – Feb. 22, 1917

PIHS wins — Presque Isle School defeated the Caribou five in a very fast game at the Perry 41-15. Caribou fought a hard game but were outclassed from the first. In the first half, “Guss” White played his position at left forward. He made his guard travel some. Although he only made one goal, he helped make others. In the second half, his position changed to center where he loosened up and made three more. He was all over the floor at all times playing all positions in excellent form.

Bowling tournament — Another bowling tournament by the Mooseleuk Club was held at Hedrich’s with the following score and five big averages: DeWitt’s team, 2276; McKinley’s team 2246; Hardy’s team 2176; Wood’s team, 2090. Highest individual averages: Howard Smith, 91; Frank Hayes, 88;  Clayton Steele, 88; Bill Seaborn, 87; and Ralph Hardy, 85.

75 Years Ago –  Feb. 25, 1943

Bates Honor List — Edith  W. Dahlgren, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Godfrey Dahlgren, Washburn, was among the 116 students from ten states named to the honor list for the fall semester at Bates college, according to announcement by President Clifton D. Gray at the Honors Day exercises in chapel. Forty-one of those named were from Maine, which had the second largest representation on the list. Massachusetts with 43 led the list. Miss Dahlgren, a member of several clubs, one of them was the Phi Beta Kappa, had been on the honors list consistently and several times had received grades of straight “A”

$12,000 in bonds — It was estimated that War Bonds totalling in the vicinity of $12,000 were sold relative to the War Bond Dance staged at the Northeastland hotel. Nearly $5,000 worth were sold at “the gate by Cashier Percy Winslow of the Bank. Music for the dance was provided at no charge by the Airfield orchestra. William Larkin, hotel manager, contributed the use of the ballroom for the occasion.

50 Years Ago –  Feb. 21, 1968

Project engineer — Charles S. Knight, chairman of the St. John-Aroostook Resource Conservation and Development Project, announced the assignment of Arthur R. Taylor, a 1967 graduate of the University of Maine with a degree in agricultural Engineering and engineer of the Soil Conservation Service, to the RC&D Project with headquarters at Presque Isle.

Local baker won award — The Better Bread Silver Trophy, one of the most coveted awards of the baking industry, had been received by Aroostook Baking Co., Presque Isle, in recognition of the baking excellence of its ABC Sunbeam Bread. The award was presented by Quality Bakers of America Cooperative, Incorporated after a monthly bread competition for twelve months in 1967.

25 Years Ago –  Feb. 24, 1993

New postmaster — Clint Watson has officially been named Presque Isle’s newest postmaster. Watson’s postal career began in Island Falls in 1979 as a part-time clerk in that office. He was later transferred to Bangor in June 1980 where he worked as a mail handler, a city letter carrier and an address information specialist, before being promoted to the position of operations specialist in the Bangor management Section Center in 1981. Following the consolidation of the Bangor and Portland management section centers in December 1989, Watson became the postmaster of the Mars Hill post office.

Durost promoted — McCain Foods, Inc. announced that Harold B. Durost had been promoted to the position of senior vice president, finance and administration, for the Rosemont, Ill.-based potato processing company. He became in charge of McMain Transport as well as all aspects of McCain Foods’ administrative and accounting areas, systems, credit, collections, and accounts receivable and payable.

Scouts recognized — Members of Boy Scout Troop 171, sponsored by the Grant Memorial Methodist Church of Presque Isle, received awards at a Court of Honor held at the church. Receiving awards were, Chris York, Tom York, Shawn Berry, Andy Miller, Owen McMahon, Chris Abbott and Tom McMahon.
