FORT KENT, Maine — The Fort Kent Community High School Warriors captured the 2018 Class C Boys State Nordic Skiing Championship Friday, following a 5-kilometer freestyle race that capped off the two-day Class B and C state Nordic ski meet at the Fort Kent Outdoor Center.
“It’s been a fantastic two days,” Fort Kent coach Carl Theriault said following the awards ceremony.
Nearly 200 skiers from schools around Maine gathered for the season-ending cross country ski meet that featured the 5k classic style race on Thursday.
The Madawaska boys finished second overall, behind Fort Kent. Waynflete Academy in Portland was third.

The Orono girls took home the 2018 Class C state Nordic championship. The Fort Kent girls just missed second place, coming in just one point behind the Madawaska Owls.
In Class B boys, Maranacook High School skied to the top spot and Maine Coast Waldorf School in Freeport was the runner-up. Freeport High School was third.
The Yarmouth High School girls took first place in the Class B team championships, just eight points ahead of Maine Coast Waldorf. Maranacook came in third place for the girls.
Fort Kent’s boys and girls each earned the Class C Sportsmanship Award. The Maranacook teams took home the Sportsmanship Awards for Class B.
Fort Kent’s Niko Naranja, with a time of 14 minutes, 19.5 seconds, took the top spot in Friday’s Class C boys’ freestyle race. Orono’s Sam Holt (14:26.0) claimed second, just ahead of Gaelen Boyle-Wight (14:29.) of Telstar High School in Bethel.
In Class B, Maine Coast Waldorf’s Nick Neveu (13:56.2) was first, followed by Maranacook’s Luke Bartol (14:06.8). Presque Isle’s Max Bartley (14:08.2) was third.
Madawaska’s Isabelle Jandreau (16:22.3) left her competitors far behind enroute to taking first place in the Class C girls’ freestyle race.
Maine School of Science and Math’s Dolce Tanguay (17:54.6) was second, followed by Orono’s Liza Gallant (17:58.5).
Sophia Laukli (14:54.7) of Yarmouth earned a first place finish Friday in the Class B freestyle race. Maine Coast Waldorf Olivia Skillings (15:37.1) was second, followed by Presque Isle’s Isabelle Jackson.
