Mapleton kicks off Planet Head Day

Mapleton United Methodist Church kicked off Planet Head Day celebrations this past Sunday after Sunday morning worship.  Pastor John DeFelice and church member Saul Nunez volunteered to have their heads shaved and painted following the church service for the purpose of raising donations for Planet Head Day, sponsored by the Caring Area Neighbors For Cancer Education and Recovery (C-A-N-C-E-R).

Pastor John DeFelice and church member Saul Nunez got a “head start” on Planet Head Day as members of the United Methodist Church of Mapleton helped shave and paint their heads and then collected donations in their honor to be given to Caring Area Neighbors For Cancer Education and Recovery (C-A-N-C-E-R) at the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Planet Head Day this Saturday, March 10.

They decided to have their heads shaved and painted as a prelude to Planet Head Day, which will take place at the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Saturday, March 10.  Pastor John has had his head shaved in the past but was unable to be here on this year’s scheduled date, so his congregation at the United Methodist Church in Mapleton is helping him out by having a mini Planet Head Day for him.  Saul Nunez will also be away at the time of the event and as a result volunteered to join Pastor John in the celebration.

This year was the first time Nunez, 22, volunteered  to have his head shaved for Planet Head Day.   Heidi Nunez, his mother, did the honors cutting his hair and helping church member Susan Black paint Pastor John’s and Saul’s heads to match the planet Pluto with a heart.

Church members and attendees looked on and made donations that will be presented at Planet Head Day to C-A-N-C-E-R.  Pastor John has personally battled cancer in the past.  He encourages everyone to support the cause in order to help families deal with the challenges of cancer.
