Presque Isle – Wilfred G. Trafton, 91, died January 15, 2007 at a Mars Hill healthcare facility. He was born July 31, 1915 in Mapleton, the son of George and Leon (Stewart) Trafton.
“Wimpy”, as he was lovingly known as, was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He served in the US Army during WW II. He was very active in many civic and fraternal organizations in the area such as, the Hayward-Frazier Post # 2599 VFW, Ray Goding Post # 88 American Legion, past pres. Presque Isle Community Association, which later became the Presque Isle Chamber of Commerce, past member of Presque Isle Park and Recreation Board, past pres., Aroostook Semi Pro Baseball League, a charter member of the Presque Isle Kiwanis Club, the Presque Isle Rotary Club, a former Trustee of the Mark and Emily Turner Library and the Mark and Emily Turner Foundation, the Presque Isle Lodge of Elks, former officer and director of the Northeastland Hotel, the Abanaki Club, Presque Isle Boosters Club, Mooselick Club, Presque Isle Country Club and the Upper St. John Valley Seniors Golf Association.
Surviving him is a daughter, Cynthia Bradford of Oregon; stepson, Richard Downing of Presque Isle; stepdaughter, Carolan Strout of Presque Isle; a brother, Harold Trafton of Portland; 9 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild; 3 special nephews, Duane Dow of Meriden, CT, Larry Dow of Gaston, NC, Dana Dow of Brafelton, GA and a daughter-in-law, Devona Downing. Also special friends, Roger Carroll, Cathy Walton, Peggy Erwin and Carl Doughty. Predeceasing him was his wife Marguerite Downing Trafton; 2 sisters, Annie and Margaret Dow; a stepson, Michael Downing and a step son-in-law, Larry Strout.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 AM Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Main St in Presque Isle with Rev. Raymond Morency celebrant. Relatives and friends may call at the church from 9:00 AM until the time of the service. A spring interment will be in the Fairmount Cemetery in Presque Isle.
