HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton Rotary Club met for its luncheon meeting on Monday, March 5, 2018. There were two guests present, Caribou Rotarian John Kalich and his mother Natalie. Nathan Bodenstab conducted the program.

He showed a couple of videos about the definition of Rotary and the vision of Rotary. This was in preparation for a break out session into the committees that form the working wheel of Houlton Rotary.

Public Relations, Membership, Community Service and Literacy committees are formed and within these groups ideas are hatched and also executed. For example, Bingo Night is coming up and the Public Relations committee was wondering about hanging a Rotary banner and running videos while the games are being played to advertise the activities that the club has supported over the years.

Before going out to purchase a banner the storage closet was checked and a wonderful banner was found for display. It is good to stop and re-access the workings of the club to realize what is already available.

Photos of past events are gracing the wall of Watson Hall and these will be formatted into a video to share what has happened over the past 50 years. Rotarians are people of action and people who tend to turn a vision into a reality.

At a Sept. 9, 2017 club meeting, the idea of Rotary presence in town parades was broached. The holiday parade in December had a group of Rotarians and Literacy Committee folks handing out books.

Now the idea of a July 4th float is in the making. A committee will soon be formed to make this happen. Another successful undertaking from the September meeting was the creation of a brochure that can be left at businesses and offices advertising Rotary. These attractive turquoise colored tri-folds can be found around town. New members are always welcome. Service above self is a satisfying life style. The Houlton Rotary club meetings have the atmosphere that reflects this satisfaction. Visiting Rotarians often comment on the positive, convivial feeling during the club meetings. As one member says it feels like a big happy family.
