MARS HILL, Maine — Maine State Police Tuesday arrested a North Carolina man, who is wanted on sexual assault charges in Texas, after he apparently spent several nights sleeping at the Mars Hill waste transfer station.
State police arrested Jason Lopresto, 35 of Raleigh, North Carolina, after a trooper found him walking in Mars Hill Tuesday night and learned he had an extraditable warrant from Killeen, Texas, with a $200,000 bond, according to a press release. The warrant stems from sexual assault charges in Texas, said Maine State Police Sgt. Jeffrey Clark.
Lopresto was taken to the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton and will appear for a court hearing Thursday.
Over the last week, the Maine State Police received reports of a suspicious person who may have been sleeping at the Mars Hill transfer station on Mill Street.
State police troopers looked in the area and noticed personal items in one of the trailers, while station employees reported that their equipment was running low on fuel — a sign of someone possibly using the heater overnight, according to the press release.
At about 9 p.m. Tuesday, Trooper Andrew Levesque was patrolling the area and noticed a man wearing heavy clothes near the station, stopped him and asked for identification.
He determined the man was Lopresto and a state police dispatcher searched databases, which revealed the active warrant for his arrest, according to the press release.
As of Tuesday morning, Lopresto was awaiting a court hearing at the Aroostook County Jail.
