Greaves takes over PIHS soccer post
PRESQUE ISLE — Presque Isle High School is getting ready for the upcoming fall sports season.
Athletic Administrator Mark White announced the hiring of Joseph Greaves as head varsity boys soccer coach.
Greaves is a 2001 graduate of PIHS and a 2005 graduate of the University of Maine at Orono. He currently teaches science at the high school and more recently served as the girls JV soccer coach.

NEW COACH — Joseph Greaves will take over as coach of the PIHS varsity boys soccer team this fall.
“I wanted to coach varsity boys soccer at Presque Isle since I was a kid,” he said. “I played for them and it has always been a dream of mine to come back and give it a shot.”
The last two years of high school Greaves was the starting sweeper for the Wildcats. As the last line of defense before the goalie he knows how important it is to prevent the opponent from scoring but he says you have to play two-way soccer.
“We are going to be a little bit of both (offense and defense). We are going to strive to have a solid defense. Have as many shutouts as possible, but then again defense alone doesn’t win games. We want to make sure we put the ball in the back of the net,” he said.
Greaves enters the position knowing there are high expectations, but he is confident the group of players back from last year will help meet those objectives. “We have a very good team coming back. We have a very good core. We lost a few seniors, but the boys coming back should be able to fill those holes,” he said.
Varsity tryouts are coming up on Aug. 1, but Greaves says the season can’t come soon enough. “I am excited-just got the job on Friday, and I am already working on the upcoming season. I am pumped.”
Greaves replaces Scott Young, who stepped down as coach earlier this year.
The new coach lives in Mapleton with his wife, Kristi. The couple has one child and is expecting their second in December.
