Public advocate seeks utility hike hearings

HALLOWELL, Maine — The Office of the Public Advocate recently requested that the Public Utilities Commission hold three public witness hearings in areas serviced by Emera Maine.

This request is in response to Emera’s current rate case request for a $10 million distribution revenue requirement increase, an increase in rates of 12 percent.  An average residential customer using 500 kWh per month would see a bill increase of $3.60.

The OPA suggested the commission hold three hearings, one in Bangor, another in Presque Isle and a third in Eastport or another town further down east.

The OPA also suggested the PUC take testimony at these hearings regarding Emera’s response to the October 2017 wind storm and its request for an accounting order for recovery of storm-related costs of over $7 million, in addition to the rate increase.

This is the third request for a rate increase from Emera in five years. Prior requests have been for a 9.4 percent increase in December 2013 and an 8 percent increase in March 2016.

“The Office of the Public Advocate believes that Emera’s customers should have an opportunity to express to the PUC their views about these increases as well as voice their concerns about the quality of service they received during that time,” stated Public Advocate Barry J. Hobbins.

The OPA is currently awaiting notification by the PUC of any such scheduled hearings.
