Back home — Mrs. J. C. Rose returned from Boston, where she had been enjoying a week with her husband, who is on his return to his semi-annual trip to the south in the interests of the Crossett Shoe Co.
75 Years Ago – Mar. 25, 1943
Gets medal — Frank A. Peabody, well-known insurance man of Market Square, Houlton, who is the representative of the Fidelity-Phenix Fire Insurance Company and the Continental Insurance Company, member companies of the America Fire Insurance and Indemnity Group, has just been presented with a handsome initialed lifetime Sheaffer pen and pencil set by the Fidelity-Phenix and a gold medal by the Continental in token of more than twenty-five years representation of these companies.
HHS to buy a Jeep — At the regular bond and stamp sale period at Houlton High School, the pupils plan to sell enough bonds and stamps to enable them to inform the War Savings Stamp Committee that they have secured enough money in one day’s sales to purchase a ‘Jeep’ for the use of our fighting men. A ‘Jeep’ costs in the neighborhood of $1,000 and since the sales at the school have been averaging between $350 and $400, the objective is a high one and one that would require each pupil to more than double his or her average contribution.
50 Years Ago – Mar. 20, 1968
Capped — Ann Reed of Houlton was among 50 students nurses capped at a candlelight ceremony, at the School of Nursing of Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge.
WON — The Ricker College varsity basketball team won its seventh consecutive Northeast College Conference championship during the 1967-68 season.
25 Years Ago – Mar. 24, 1993
Adding it up — The seventh-grade Houlton math team got together to ponder their next numerical challenge, the annual spring math meet, held at UMPI on April 28. Melissa Howe, Phillip Merritt, Chris Brushett, and Billie Jo Taylor honed up their math skills.
Store closes — Agway announced that Fogg’s Building Center, 57 Bangor Street, Houlton, became an Agway franchised representative handling the cooperative’s farm and consumer product lines. Agway announced it would close its retail store on North Road, Route 1, and move its existing inventory to Fogg’s. The vacated property was to be sold. Fogg’s Building Center was owned by Al Putnam and Steve Richardson, who bought the business about two years previously.
