PRESQUE ISLE — A handful of car burglaries were reported in the city in the past week, bringing the total number of reports to nearly 20 being investigated by the Presque Isle Police Department.

On Monday, June 27, a State Street resident came into the station to report that someone had entered his unlocked car and stolen about $50 in cash and cigarettes from the vehicle. He advised police that he’d seen a couple individuals walking in the area around the same time the theft was discovered. Officer Rob Thibeault checked the area but was unable to locate anyone matching the description given.

On Friday, July 1, A Parsons Street resident contacted police advising someone got into his car and stole his GPS system and possibly other items. Officer Kevin Schumacher was assigned.

On Sunday, July 3, a University Street resident also reported a vehicle burglarized. The man called police reporting he’d found his vehicle had been entered and some loose change and his GPS were missing. The caller indicated a family friend had noticed the dome light on when they were leaving the residence and went back to tell them. The caller went out and shut it off but later decided to check the car and found items missing. Officer Lynn Hartley responded.

Two more reports were received on July 3 — both from Mechanic Street residents who reported their vehicles had been rifled through but nothing appeared to be missing.

Police are asking car owners to lock vehicles when not in use to deter such criminal activity. Anyone with information about the recent burglaries is asked to contact the PIPD at 764-4476.
