PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — United Insurance recently contributed $2,500 to the Riverside Playground Project.
The project — a joint effort between the Presque Isle Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs, United Way of Aroostook and the City of Presque Isle — has so far raised $275,000 in cash and pledges towards the $332,000 goal.
Organizers aim to feature adaptive playground equipment so children of all abilities can enjoy the facility. Riverside Park’s 40-year-old playground equipment was removed last year.
The new playground space will have more than 30 features for children ages 2 through 12. A groundbreaking ceremony will be held in the spring with a ribbon cutting upon completion.
“Quality recreation and physical activity opportunities are vital to the health and personal development of children for reducing stress, increasing self-esteem, and helping children do better at school,” said Kim Smith, city public information officer and grant writer.
Smith said children in low-income families are much less likely than children in high-income families to participate in organized sports (25 percent compared to 75 percent) and quality recreation programs. Barriers include fees, equipment costs, lack of transportation or family support, isolation; inadequate facilities and safety.
“The location of this playground is immediately adjacent to two low-income neighborhoods in a safe and highly visible green space park,” Smith added.
