UMPI softball team riding 6-game win streak

ORONO, Maine — Coach Sara Shaw’s UMPI Owls’ softball team made it six wins in a row after sweeping Pine Manor College of Newton, Massachusetts, in a pair of doubleheaders played Saturday and Sunday inside the University of Maine’s Mahaney Dome.

The Owls won Saturday’s contests, 13-0 and 13-1. The following day, they won by scores of 14-0 and 11-3.

In the opener on Saturday, Melanee Terry, Marissa Reagle and Emily Page all had big hits early in the game, while Ayana Walker homered and Madison Exferd doubled later in the contest. Sara Packard, UMPI’s pitcher, had her no-hitter broken up in the fifth inning but notched the victory.

UMPI tallied eight first-inning runs in the back end of the twinbill. Roni Shaw led off with a home run and Brookelynn Garcia slammed a run-scoring double in the inning. Garcia also was credited with the pitching win.

On Sunday, Anaiz Diaz ripped her first career homer in the first and Terry added her fourth homer of the season in the third inning. The eight-run rally also included a two-run double by Page. Garcia and Alyssa Merone notched RBI hits in the shutout win.

Pine Manor took the early lead in game two by scoring twice in the first, but Merone, Page and Alexis Levesque strung together hits in the second to take a 3-2 advantage.

Legassie had a run-scoring hit in the third and Packard drove in Jackie Peers on a single to cap the scoring.

Packard, Garcia and Reagle shared the pitching duties in the two Sunday games.

UMPI’s next games are Friday and Saturday in South Portland against Southern Maine Community College. Doubleheaders will be played each day, beginning at 3:30 p.m. Friday and at 11 a.m. Saturday.
