BANGOR, Maine — The University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team made its shortest road trip of the season Tuesday, but lost both ends of a doubleheader against Husson University played on the Harold Alfond Diamond at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex.

The Eagles won the first game, 5-1, and took the second, 6-2.

UMPI’s record dropped to 2-18, while Husson’s improved to 5-8.

The opener was scoreless through four innings before the Owls took the lead in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Angel Morales, which plated Jordan Hanscomb.

The Eagles answered with two runs in the sixth, one in the seventh and two more in the eighth for the final margin of victory.

Austin Smith started on the mound for Husson and was credited with the win. He scattered eight hits over his seven innings of work and struck out four batters along the way.

Will Stinson had a pair of hits for UMPI. He was effective as the starting pitcher by not allowing an earned run over 5-1/3 innings. Tyler McLaughlin, Colby Spencer and Frank Nunez also pitched for the Owls.

In the nightcap, the Owls again broke out to an early lead as Bradley Patterson doubled in Ryan Sanderson for a first-inning run.

Husson took the lead in the bottom of the inning on a bases-loaded double by Luke Covey. Stefen Strachan singled home Covey to complete the four-run rally.

The Eagles added a fifth run in the bottom of the second before UMPI’s Jesus Garcia scored on an error in the top of the fourth, making it 5-2. But the Owls did not get any closer and Husson added a late insurance run to account for the final score.

Cameron Graham of Littleton, a Houlton High School graduate, struck out seven batters in his five innings of work to gain the victory on the mound for Husson.

UMPI’s Patterson, who went the first four innings, was tagged for the pitching loss. Matt Curry pitched the other two innings. Sanderson led the Owls’ offense with four hits.

The Owls next play a single game against New Hampshire Technical Institute at 3:30 p.m. Friday in Concord, New Hampshire.
