Ark Animal Sanctuary (week of April 11, 2018)

In our last article we told you about a cat named Moose. We just wanted to update you on Moose’s condition. On March 22 Moose underwent surgery to remove the malignant mass in his ear and have a total ear resection. It was a delicate surgery and it was also a lengthy surgery.

I was fortunate enough to be with Moose as he was waking up from the surgery. He was heavily sedated, so I don’t even think he knew I was there, but it made me feel better being there. It is funny how your mind works when you care about and love the animals that you rescue. You take comfort in the small things like just being there.

While Moose was in recovery the vet discussed the end results of the surgery and once again it was not the news we had hoped for. The mass had penetrated the cartilage and attached itself  to the skull. Dr. Monteith said she removed as much as she could but knew that she did not get it all. What does this mean for Moose? It means that the mass will probably re-appear as a growth behind the ear or in the neck area. How long will that take? Moose could have a few weeks left or a few months either way it is not enough time.

Moose is now back home at the sanctuary where he has his own room. He is not in pain. He is eating. He is purring and we are taking one day at a time. Our goal is to make Moose comfortable, happy and loved in his final days. Shortly he will have a new roommate. Keith will be keeping Moose company. These two go way back before the days of the fire. They love each other and they will keep each other company.

I look at Moose and I see this big beautiful boy with the most beautiful eyes and the tattered ear and I feel so lucky to have been a part of his journey in life. He has touched our hearts and each day that we have with him is a gift, We will take one day at a time and be grateful for every day we have with him. We will celebrate his life and let him know he is loved.

We have been out there fundraising non-stop to cover all of Moose’s medical expenses. To all of you who purchased an Easter planter or Easter cake we cannot thank you enough.  To those people who sent in donations, we are forever grateful. Together we raised over $1,000 for Moose in a short amount of time. It is amazing how so many people came together to help a cat named Moose. It restores my faith in mankind.

We have created a bucket list for Moose and are in hopes that we will be able to fulfill it in the upcoming days.

– Spend my final days with Keith.

– Spend time outdoors.

– Plenty of catnip.

– Endless supply of treats.

– Plenty of cat naps and kisses.

– Have a Birthday party, Just a day devoted to Moose.

– Officially get adopted.

– Meet Oprah.

While we know that number 8 is a tall order where Moose is concerned we will reach for the stars. We will keep you updated on Moose’s condition and we ask that you keep him in your thoughts and prayers

Thank you for your continued support and as always thank you for reading our column.
